De La Hoya 'forgives' White after his dig at drug addiction battles

Oscar De La Hoya says he ‘forgives’ Dana White after UFC supremo aimed dig at his battles with drug addiction following 47-year-old’s announcement that he planned to return to the ring

  • Oscar De La Hoya recently confirmed he will stage a comeback after 12 years
  • UFC president Dana White has had a long-running war of words with De La Hoya
  • It stems from a difference of opinion on the 2017 Mayweather vs McGregor fight
  • But De La Hoya now seems keen to bury the hatchet with the UFC supremo

Oscar De La Hoya insists he has forgiven UFC president Dana White after their heated war of words in recent years.

De La Hoya, who is now a boxing promoter for Golden Boy, recently announced he is returning to the ring at the age of 47, having not fought professionally in 12 years.

Upon hearing the news in August, White brutally stated: ‘Cocaine isn’t cheap. It’s expensive. You’ve gotta make money,’ but De La Hoya is now keen to bury the hatchet with the UFC supremo, who is currently promoting UFC 254 on Saturday night.

Oscar De La Hoya says he ‘forgives’ UFC president Dana White for all his insults recently

White’s response to De La Hoya’s return was: ‘Cocaine isn’t cheap… you’ve gotta make money’

Asked about White on Tuesday evening, De La Hoya said: ‘Dana White? Come on, what am I gonna say about Dana White?

‘I just, you know what, I forgive the guy, whatever he says. He might be having issues, problems in his life, he might be too stressed, so I understand.

‘But I’m a very forgiving guy so whatever has been said— Maybe I had stuff in my life as well and I said stuff about him.

‘So, you know, hopefully we can just crush it once and for all and just move on. He sticks to MMA and I stick to boxing.’

De La Hoya has a rivalry with White and has admitted to drug and alcohol addiction previously

The pair first locked horns after De La Hoya was dismissive of Conor McGregor’s mega boxing fight against Floyd Mayweather in 2017, urging fans not to ‘pay to see a joke of a fight.’

But White, who was co-promoting the fight, responded angrily: ‘WTF?!? Is this guy snorting coke and drinking booze again??!?’

De La Hoya has previously admitted to being addicted to cocaine and alcohol.

De La Hoya’s last fight was a defeat to Manny Pacquiao all the way back in December 2008

In October 2019, White also labelled De La Hoya ‘a scumbag, a liar and a complete moron’, while also calling him ‘a total f****** nutbag’ in another interview in June.

De La Hoya enjoyed an illustrious career in the ring, winning 11 world titles across six weight classes in a career that spanned from 1992 to 2008.

He is now back in training ahead of a return to the ring, with his last bout being a defeat to Manny Pacquiao in December 2008.
