Luke Edwards: Dana White wants Khamzat Chimaev to beat me

‘I know he’s praying this kid wins’: Luke Edwards believes UFC president Dana White wants next opponent Khamzat Chimaev to beat him next month… but the Briton claims he will be ‘way too much’ for the Russian-born Swede

  • Luke Edwards will take on Khamzat Chimaev in the ocatgon on December 19
  • The Briton believes UFC president Dana White wants Chimaev to beat him
  • Russian-born fighter Chimaev is undefeated over the nine fights of his career

Luke Edwards has claimed UFC president Dana White is backing Khamzat Chimaev to beat him in next month’s fight between the pair.

The rivals will meet on December 19 in a highly-anticipated clash in the octagon between two of the most in-form fighters in MMA at the moment.

Edwards, however, believes White is a huge supporter of the Russian-born Swede, though the Briton claims he will be too much for Chimaev next month.

The 29-year-old told MMA fighting this week: ‘The UFC loves him (Chimaev). Dana (White) loves him. They all think he can’t be beat.

‘When I go out there and take him out, I can’t see what they can say next to give me my title shot. I’d be on a nine-fight win streak.

‘I know the UFC’s probably banking, Dana anyway, I know he’s praying that this kid wins, but I’ll be way too much for him in there, I’m telling you.’

Edwards has won his last eight fights, with the Chimaev clash later this year coming on the five-year anniversary of his last defeat to Kamaru Usman in 2015.

Chimaev, meanwhile, is yet to lose in his career since breaking onto the scene in 2018, with his latest victory being a first-round knockout against Gerald Meerschaert in September.

Despite his opponent being undefeated, Edwards claims the praise surrounding Chimaev is not warranted.

The world number three in the welterweight division added: ‘They’ve done this before with other fighters. They’d get one, two good wins in their career and the UFC kind of pushed them straight to the top, and then they get beat.

UFC president White (above) claims he has never seen a prospect like Chimaev in his career

‘Like in boxing, if you’re a good prospect, they kind of build you slowly, make you learn the tricks of the trade and go through adversity. They’ve done it to many other fighters you can name. It’s not worked out.’

White has shown an interest in Chimaev’s career since his first MMA fight in 2018. Earlier this year, the Russian broke the UFC record for the quickest turnaround in victories after two wins in 10 days against both John Phillips and Rhys McKee in July.

Speaking about the Swede in September, the UFC president claimed: ‘The guy is special. I’ve been in this game my whole life, I’ve never seen anything like him.

‘I’m telling you the guy is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Never seen anything like this in my life. Special.’
