Arsenal ace Thomas Partey would be ‘shocked’ by team-mates display against Aston Villa

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes Thomas Partey would have been ‘shocked’ by how the team capitulated in the second half of their defeat to Aston Villa.

The week prior to Villa’s visit to the Emirates, Partey produced a man-of-the-match display as the Gunners beat Manchester United.

But from the outset against Villa, Arsenal were on the backfoot and the away side got the reward they deserved when they went ahead thanks to a Bukayo Saka own goal.

Partey was forced to come off at half-time due to a thigh injury sustained early on in the match.

And his absence was majorly felt as Arsenal struggled to cope with a vibrant and confident Villa team, led by Jack Grealish.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be hoping Partey can regain full fitness to feature against Leeds United on November 22.

And Campbell thinks the Ghana international will have been taken aback by the defeat and the injury.

“I am sure Thomas Partey would have been shocked by the performance against Aston Villa,” he told Football Insider.

“The frustrating thing is that this guy was virtually ever-present at Atletico.

“He rarely suffered an injury but the Premier League is a different kettle of fish and this is something Arsenal have to deal with.

“It’s an Arsenal thing – you have just signed a top player, he plays well and he gets injured.”

Meanwhile, Nicolas Pepe has expressed unhappiness about his playing time under Mikel Arteta with just one start in the Premier League this season.

“My goal is to play more. To have a little more playing time,” Pepe told French channel Canal Plus.

“A player who plays is happy. For me, I would like to play a little more to find a smile again.

“He (Arteta) wants me to be 100 per cent focused during the 90 minutes of the match. Afterwards, I see during training that I will be a substitute the following weekend.

“But the coach speaks to me, he also has assistants who are there for that. But it is frustrating for any player to be on the bench.

“A super-sub role? The coach makes his choices. It’s up to me to show him that I don’t have that role.”
