Arsenal chiefs make decision on signing Dennis Bergkamp’s son Mitchel after trial

Arsenal have decided against signing the son of club legend Dennis Bergkamp. Mitchel Bergkamp had a week-long trial at Arsenal in October but it appears the Gunners will not be pursuing the midfielder.

Bergkamp, 22, grew up in London during his father’s playing days at Arsenal.

He was pictured on the Emirates Stadium pitch at Dennis’ testimonial in 2006.

Bergkamp remembers Arsenal fondly following his time in England.

In an interview with ELF Voetbal in 2019, he said: “My father also played for Internazionale and Ajax, two wonderful clubs, but Arsenal feels like home.

“Whether I choose the Emirates or Highbury? I would have preferred to play at Highbury.

“There are the memories of everything my father has done for the club.”

But Goal reports that Bergkamp junior will not be moving to the Gunners as a player.

He has been a free agent since leaving Dutch side Almere City in the summer.

Bergkamp first joined Almere City in 2011 aged 12 but now is on the lookout for his next club.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are in the market for midfielders ahead of the January transfer window.

Mikel Arteta’s side are struggling in front of goal, having scored just nine times in their first eight Premier League games of the season.

Arteta wanted to sign Lyon star Houssem Aouar in the summer but failed to get a deal over the line for the 22-year-old.

The latest player to be linked with a move to the Emirates is Red Bull Salzburg star Dominik Szoboszlai.

Real Madrid are also said to be interested in the 20-year-old Hungary international.

And Germany legend Lothar Matthaus believes his former club Bayern Munich will also be in the race.

“He is a gem,” Matthaus told Munchner Abendzeitung. “He’s like Kai Havertz.

“He could move to RB Leipzig in January, but I’m convinced that every top club in Europe has him on their list, including FC Bayern.

“In Hungary, Szoboszlai is already being compared to the great Ferenc Puskas.”

Szoboszlai’s national team manager Marco Rossi can see him moving to Germany at some point in his career.

Rossi told CalcioNapoli34 TV: “My feeling is that he is more likely to end up in Germany: he is ready to make the leap, going to the Bundesliga where there’s a faster pace.

“The Austrian football of Salzburg is similar to that of the Bundesliga and a move to Italy would involve changes and periods of adaptation from a tactical point of view.”
