Chris Smalling set to finally get wish and confirm Man Utd exit

Manchester United outcast Chris Smalling is finally set to end his stay at Old Trafford.

The defender – who joined the Red Devils from Fulham in July 2010 – spent the duration of the 2019-20 season on loan in Italy with Serie A giants Roma.

Smalling, who United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had deemed to be surplus to requirements, enjoyed a good season in the Italian capital – in which he made a total of 37 appearances for the Wolves.

Roma have been trying to re-acquire Smalling's services on a permanent basis over the last few weeks but have yet to meet United's valuation of the England international.

But according toThe Athletic , that is close to changing.

They claim both parties made "significant" progress over the deal earlier this week, with only the fine details needing to be ironed out.

It's said that Roma initially offered United £18million for Smalling, whom the Premier League side value at £20million.

Smalling thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Stadio Olimpico and admitted he was "gutted" to be leaving after the culmination of his loan spell.

“I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season,’" Smalling said in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten.

“I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!”

Smalling has yet to feature for United this season, with Solskjaer opting to start Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof ahead of him.

Should he return to Rome before transfer deadline day, the 30-year-old's first outing of the season could come against Benevento a fortnight on Saturday.
