Diego Forlan played a hidden role in Man Utd’s summer transfer business

Diego Forlan reportedly persuaded Facundo Pellistri to snub Lyon and join Manchester United on transfer Deadline Day.

Forlan, who also played a role in the move that took Edinson Cavani to Old Trafford, had a brief spell in charge of Penarol in Uruguay before leaving his position in September this year.

Pellistri joined the Red Devils from Pellistri though had been heavily linked with a move to French giants Lyon.

It’s believed Lyon had a €7m offer accepted with a five-year contract ready to be signed.

Though ESPN claim Forlan held talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and also convinced Pellistri to sign for the Red Devils over Lyon.

Forlan had also played a key role in United’s signing of Cavani with the striker making the move to Old Trafford on Monday.

“Diego, when he had to give references about me, he did it, he said very good things,” Cavani told Uruguayan media.

“It’s okay to dream, but I like to wish things better. Dreaming seems fantasy, but wishing things makes you see them more real.”

And Forlan has no worries how his friend will fare in Manchester.

“I think Cavani is going to do well,” Forlan told the National. “Edinson will show his conduct and way of doing things, his professionalism, the way he works hard and trains.

"It will be his conduct that other players can watch and learn from.”

Cavani can’t wait to get going, adding: “I hope I can score plenty, and I’ll be working hard towards doing that.

“As I said earlier, I’m coming here with a real desire to work hard and to prepare, and to be available for my team-mates and to the manager for selection.

“I want to be able to take all that effort and hard work out onto the pitch, and together be able to achieve great things, big things with Manchester United.

“I’m so keen and excited to get playing and competing again, and God willing, I can score goals, which is pretty important for everybody and also for me, as a striker.”
