Diego Simeone ‘angry’ as Arsenal set to complete late transfer for Thomas Partey

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is reportedly angry that he is set to lose Thomas Partey to Arsenal. The Gunners have activated Partey’s release clause of £45million following months of speculation surrounding the 27-year-old. But Simeone is not said to be happy with the situation.

Libertad Digital reporter David Vinuesa Malbac claims Simeone did not expect to lose Partey in this window.

His tweet claims that Simeone was planning to partner Partey with incoming Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira, who is set to move to the Wanda Metropolitano on loan.

However, Partey’s impending departure has left the former Argentina international angry.

Partey has been linked with the Gunners throughout the summer window but the north London club were not prepared to pay his release clause until now.

Arsenal also wanted to sign Lyon star Houssem Aouar but their pursuit of the 22-year-old fell through at the weekend.

But former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Partey is the right signing for Mikel Arteta.

“I’ve been following Arsenal a lot and they’re crying out for him,” Agbonlahor said on Sky Sports News.

“Centre midfield is where Arsenal look quite weak with Xhaka and Ceballos.

“I like Elneny, but I feel like Arsenal need that midfielder who is going to tidy up, stop danger and clear up.

“I think the only reason they don’t want to pay the money is because they’re trying to get him on the cheap but now they’re seeing Atletico Madrid aren’t gonna accept a penny less than what his buyout clause is and Arsenal are gonna have to pay it.

“I think if they do pay it, you can guarantee they will finish in the top four because in their squad, that’s the only position they need to improve.

“I’ve been watching this player for a few seasons now – he tidies up play, he spots danger and clears up.

“If you look at other teams like Manchester United, they could do with someone like him in their midfield and it would be a major signing for Arsenal.”

As well as the impending departure of Torreira, Arsenal have also loaned out Matteo Guendouzi to Hertha Berlin.

However, Bayer Leverkusen pulled out of a deal for left-back Sead Kolasinac.
