England vs Iceland predicted line-ups: Team news ahead of Nations League fixture

England host Iceland in the Nations League on Wednesday night in what is somewhat of a dead rubber after the sides’ eliminations from the tournament this week.

England had to defeat Belgium on Sunday to retain a chance of advancing from Group A2, but the Three Lions were beaten 2-0. At the same time, Iceland’s search for a win – or even a point – in the competition remained unsuccessful when they lost 2-1 to Denmark after conceding a penalty in added time of the second half.

England manager Gareth Southgate will at least hope to use this fixture to try out different options in terms of personnel and – potentially – tactics, following criticism of his safety-first approach versus Belgium.

When is it?

The group-stage match will kick off at 7.45pm BST on Wednesday evening.

The fixture will take place at Wembley Stadium in London, despite suggestions that an alternative venue would be used due to coronavirus guidelines around travel in Europe.

How can I watch it?

The game will air live on Sky Sports main event, and subscribers can also stream it live on the Sky Go app and Sky Sports website.

What is the team news?

Ben Chilwell was forced off with a back issue in the first half of England’s defeat by Belgium and is unlikely to feature here. Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson was substituted at half-time in that game and Raheem Sterling was not even on the bench, so don’t expect either to necessarily be involved against Iceland.

For Iceland, Hordur Magnusson is suspended, while Ragnar Sigurdsson, Alfred Finnbogason, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are set to be absent here as Erik Hamren takes charge of the team one last time.

Predicted line-ups

England: Pope; Walker, Keane, Mings; Maitland-Niles, Rice, Winks, Saka; Sancho, Foden; Calvert-Lewin

Iceland: Runarsson; Sampsted, Ingason, Hermansson; Saevarsson, Baldursson, Bjarnason, Johannesson, Skulason; Gudjohnsen, Sigthorsson

Odds

England: 1/6

Draw: 11/2

Iceland: 16/1

Prediction

No matter which combination of players Southgate picks, they should have too much for an Iceland side that have lost all five of their Nations League games this season with a goal difference of -10. England 2-0 Iceland.
