Frank Lampard names ‘underrated’ Chelsea star who has shown different side to his game

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has hailed the vital role N’Golo Kante has played in their early-season form. The 4-1 win over Sheffield United, moved them to fifth in the table and just one point behind early pacesetters Liverpool.

Kante put in another impressive display for the Blues as they came from behind to thump the winless Blades.

And Lampard has admitted that after managing his workload, Chelsea are now getting the best out of the Frenchman.

“I have made big steps to try and manage his training and games, and making sure we attempt to keep him as fit and ready for games as we can,” said Lampard.

“He’s shown in the last couple of games he’s played he is N’Golo Kante.

“His attributes are incredible, he can play various positions in midfield, he has energy, the ability to win the ball back but also his ability on the ball. That is sometimes underrated.

“People always want to talk about him being the best defensive midfielder around and he should be in a deeper role, but he can do lots of different roles with massive effect.

“I’m pleased he is fit now and we will keep managing that.

“We will have to keep managing that to make sure he stays fit, because he is massively important.

Another player to star in the win over the Blades was Hakim Ziyech. The Moroccan has enjoyed a brilliant start to his Chelsea and continued that with two assists in the win at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard praised Ziyech following the win, suggesting the summer signing has brought a new element to his side.

Asked if Ziyech had the best left-foot in the league, Lampard said: “There are some great left-footed players in the PL. Gareth Bale is one of the best players in world football for the last 10 years and he’s back here now.

“You see quality left-footed players and there is something sweet about them generally. In football we always think that about them.

“As a coach you see someone who can find a pass as a lefty you tend to see that.

“He’s brought a different element to our game. He sees the pass and has no fear to try the pass even if he’s missed the last one because he’s trying to play game-changing passes regularly.

“I think there are a lot of parts to his game. I wouldn’t want to just lean on that. His work ethic off the ball as well, his work for the team means he’s a very complete player so I expect a lot more to come from him.”

Chelsea go into the international break with 15 points from their opening eight games, with a trip to Newcastle next up.
