Gomez, Van Dijk, Matip: Liverpool injury latest and expected return dates amid crisis

Joe Gomez has become the latest Liverpool injury casualty as Jurgen Klopp’s defensive crisis threatens to derail their title challenge. The German has already had to contend with a host of injuries to key players, including Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho.

Trent Alexander-Arnold also limped out of the draw with Manchester City due to a reported calf issue.

That injury saw him pull out of England duty, but in Wednesday’s session – it is understood his defensive colleague Gomez has suffered a serious injury.

Reports have claimed that the session at St George’s Park was prematurely ended for the Liverpool defender to receive treatment.

England boss Gareth Southgate is set to speak to reporters on Wednesday evening, where he will be asked to address the severity of the issue.

Virgil van Dijk

The Dutchman was taken out of the Merseyside derby last month, following an ugly looking challenge by Toffees keeper Jordan Pickford.

Following the game, it was confirmed Van Dijk had suffered a serious knee ligament injury that could end his season.

The club have confirmed he has since undergone successful surgery on his knee and will now focus on his rehabilitation. No timeframe has been placed on his return.

Fabinho

The Brazilian had been touted as a potential solution to Liverpool’s defensive issues, with the midfielder moving back to great impact.

However, during the win over Midtjylland in the UEFA Champions League, he was withdrawn due to a hamstring injury.

Klopp confirmed that the injury wasn’t a serious one, and he could return after this month’s international break.

He said: “After the international break he will back for sure, we just don’t know exactly when,” Klopp said.

“It’s a minor thing. It’s not something which will take him out for ages.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold

The right-back hobbled off during Sunday’s draw at the Etihad after suffering a suspected calf injury.

Klopp confirmed Alexander-Arnold would miss England’s triple header and has been given some well-earned rest while his teammates play across the world.

He is set to utlise the facilities at the club’s new AXA Training Centre next week, where he will be assessed.

The England star went for a scan on Monday, with the full extent of his injury is yet to be confirmed.

The summer signing has endured a frustrating start to life at Anfield. After impressing on his debut, Thiago tested positive for coronavirus, before then picking up an injury in the draw with Everton.

He is back in training and is another who could be back after the international break.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The versatile 270-year-old has yet to feature this season after picking up an injury during the pre-season tour of Austria.

Due to his extensive troubles with injuries, he won’t be rushed back, but there is hope is return could be imminent.
