Jose Mourinho’s 10-year Man Utd prediction for Diogo Dalot now looks bleak

Diogo Dalot is on his way to AC Milan – after failing to live up to Jose Mourinho's prediction.

It has been obvious for some time that Dalot needed to move on, having fallen down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Portuguese right-back joined United under Jose Mourinho's watch in a £19million deal while still a teenager in 2018.

He made 25 appearances in his first season – but was restricted to just 11 games last term, with Solskjaer having succeeded Mourinho as manager.

United signed first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka last summer, while the emergence of Brandon Williams has also hit Dalot hard given the left-back's ability to stand in on the right.

The 21-year-old was offered to several clubs – including Everton – but is now set for a season-long loan at Milan, despite having played in United's Carabao Cup win over Brighton last month.

Of course, Dalot is still young and has time on his side. But Mourinho's prediction about the youngster after he joined from Porto two years ago appears to have been proved wrong.

Dalot made his first United start in a 2-2 draw against Arsenal in December 2018 – and Mourinho said afterwards he could emulate Gary Neville by being the club's right-back for a decade.

“All my defenders were dead by the end,” said Mourinho. “The kid Diogo, fantastic. I think Gary Neville must be thinking that Manchester United now has a very good right back for 10 years.”

Less than two weeks after the game, Mourinho was sacked as United boss, to be replaced by Solskjaer on an interim basis before the Norwegian was handed the job permanently later that season.

A fresh start at the San Siro could do for Dalot what a loan move to Roma did for Chris Smalling last season.

The centre-half was a hit in the Italian capital, and the Serie A side are now trying to sign him on a permanent deal.

Dalot will now hope a season at Milan will give him the chance to show what it was that Mourinho saw in him.
