Manchester United were reportedly surprised to see Borussia Dortmund turn down their £90million bid for Jadon Sancho this week.
The Red Devils look set to miss out on Sancho after months of speculation, with Dortmund refusing to budge on their £108million asking price.
It is believed the England youngster has set his sights on a move to Old Trafford, but Daily Star Sport understands United cannot afford to meet Dortmund’s nine-figure valuation before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has told Utdreport that they were “convinced” the German club would accept their initial £82million bid in the current climate.
The offer is also said to have included add-ons and instalments, yet Dortmund are understood to have “always said €120million [£108million] guaranteed or nothing”.
Reports suggest United have since turned their attention to Ousmane Dembele, who could be allowed to leave Barcelona on loan before the transfer window closes on Monday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains desperate to bolster his attack despite seemingly missing out on a deal for Sancho.
However, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes the Dortmund ace will still join United before the transfer window draws to a close.
“It hasn't gone through yet but I think it will,” Redknapp told the Pitch to Post preview podcast.
“You see certain transfers and it is ebbing that way. There's a lot of to-ing and fro-ing, and when Manchester United call, or any big club, there's always a premium on players.
“Dortmund want to get as much as they can for someone like Jadon Sancho. I get that. But I think he'll be a Manchester United player by the end of the window.

“I personally think if they didn't sign Sancho in this window it wouldn't be the end of the world but if you can get him, of course you want quality around you.”
He then added: “If you don't sign him now who knows, he might end up going to Barcelona and you end up kicking yourself. I'm sure everyone would want him.”
