Manchester United are pursuing a deal to sign Atalanta winger Amad Traore – but he won't arrive before the transfer deadline.
United have been tracking Atalanta winger Traore for several years, through their European scouting network, and are trying to tie up a deal for the Ivory Coast youngster.
The 18-year-old prodigy has only made three appearances for Atalanta's first team, all of which came as a substitute last season.
Traore scored on his debut in the 7-1 beating of Udinese in Serie A, before appearing against Juventus and Parma in the months following.
But United may not be able to welcome Traore into their ranks immediately due to potential issues with getting the youngster a work permit and an eligible passport.
It means the Ivorian could have to wait until January before he is allowed to complete his move to Old Trafford.
United had been looking to sign a right winger but failed to land their primary target Jadon Sancho, who Borussia Dortmund wanted £108million for.
After refusing to meet those demands, the club began negotiations with Barcelona over the prospect of signing Ousmane Dembele, but United chiefs now believe a deal is "very unlikely".
Barca want a permanent deal or a loan with obligation to buy, which has put United off.

Traore's signing could put an end to United's search though.
With Mason Greenwood currently occupying the right forward slot, and with Daniel James in reserve, United are in a place to be patient and wait for Traore's arrival.
The acquisition of veteran striker Edinson Cavani on a free transfer also lessens the need to add experience into United's front line.
Whether Traore is ready to hit the ground running in United's first team though is something Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would still need to determined at close quarters.

United have already enquired about the possibility of taking Dembele on a season-long loan, which could provide a stop-gap while Traore settles in and gets up to speed, but that will not happen unless Barca change their stance.
The club are also trying to complete a deal for Facundo Pellistri, from Uruguayan club Penarol.
Pellistri is another 18-year-old winger, but if deals cannot be concluded for him nor Traore on deadline day, they will try again when the window reopens in January.
Meanwhile, United are also expected to complete the signing of Alex Telles from Porto in a £13.5m deal on deadline day.
The full-back and Cavani are both undergoing medicals at United's training ground ahead of their proposed transfers.
