Mesut Ozil is backing Arsenal to win their Europa League opener on Thursday evening.

The former Germany intentional seems in high spirits despite being snubbed by Mikel Arteta earlier this week – and he is backing his team-mates to take all three points against Rapid Vienna.

The Arsenal fanbase have been split over the decision to end Ozil’s chances of playing first-team football for the foreseeable future, and the player himself has been left feeling disappointed.

However, the 32-year-old thinks the Gunners will win comfortably in his absence in Austria.

He wrote on Twitter: “When I can't support on the pitch tonight, I will support in front of the TV in London.

“What are your predictions for the match? I go for a 4-1 away victory.”

Before the match BT Sport pundit and former Manchester United midfield Owen Hargreaves gave his thoughts on the situation, and he mentioned the midfielder’s incredible record of assists.

He said: ”I think the football player wants to play football. That's the only reason he signed the contract.

"He probably had a ton of other options because he wants to play for Arsenal. He's at home here, he's been here for eight years.

"I think outside of Lionel Messi he's had the most assists in Europe in that time, so we're talking about a guy who has won the World Cup, done it on the biggest stage.

"It's a shame he can't play football. He should be in the Premier League squad, he should be in the Europa League squad.

"He isn't for probably other reasons, what he knows and the club knows, but I love watching Mesut Ozil play football.

"He might not be everyone's cup of tea, but he's my cup of tea when you get to watch the football player play football.

"When you get the right pieces of the puzzle around him, like he had at Germany and Real Madrid, then he functions and it's just a shame we can't see him."
