Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has offered to pay Gunnersaurus’ salary to enable the mascot to remain at the club.
The mascot was ‘sacked’ on Monday with the man inside the costume, Jerry Quy, having been let go after spending 27 years with the club.
But Ozil has generously offered to pay Quy’s wages to allow the much-loved cuddly T-rex to stay at the Emirates.
Ozil wrote on Instagram: “I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot @officialgunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years.
“As such, I’m offering to reimburse @Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player so Jerry can continue his job that he loves so much.”
The mascot’s departure had followed the news that Arsenal were making 55 redundancies due to Covid-19.
Ozil is believed to earn £350,000 per week, making him the highest earner at the Emirates, despite not playing a single minute so far this season.
Arsenal have also splashed the cash on a new contract for star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with the Gabonese ace now taking home £250,000 per week.
Quy’s role was not believed to be counted among the 55 redundancies as it was part-time, though is part of the same cost-cutting process.

"He was at my son Harry’s 1st birthday and he’s a hero in our house!
