Jadon Sancho is likely to be the subject of an offer from Liverpool next year if, as expected, a move to Manchester United does not materialise on Monday.
And it is believed the Dortmund star will strongly consider any approach from the Reds after spending the majority of the summer waiting for United to make a bid deemed acceptable by Dortmund.
It has been no secret that Sancho has been Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's No.1 target for some time in a saga that has dragged on for a number of months.
But with the transfer window closing on Monday evening it is looking increasingly unlikely that a move will materialise unless something extraordinary happens at the last minute.
Dortmund have held firm over their £108m valuation of Sancho and have repeatedly insisted he will be staying in Germany for at least one more season.
United have now reportedly turned their attentions to Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele instead, and according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo that could open the door for Liverpool to make a move for Sancho next year.
Despite holding firm over keeping him this summer, Dortmund are much more likely to be open to Sancho moving on in the summer of 2021, particularly given he would then only have two more years left on his contract.
The England international's first choice of destination was known to be United this year, but given the frustrations of their negotiations, not to mention their contrasting fortunes on the pitch compared to Liverpool, Sancho may well favour a switch to Merseyside over Manchester.

And Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's strong links with his former club Dortmund may also help the proceedings if he does fancy adding Sancho to his squad.
It remains to be seen, meanwhile, whether United will be able to complete a deal for Dembele in addition to the imminent arrivals of Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles.
The French forward was never thought to have been their first choice, but with time running out he may well prove to be the only available option as the club desperately look to strengthen the squad before it is too late.
