Trainer Patrick Payne will be out to go one better with Double You Tee in the 2020 Ballarat Cup.

A decision made in September could lead to Double You Tee going one better than last year’s narrow defeat in Saturday’s $500,000 Ballarat Cup.

Double You Tee fell a half-head short of winning last year’s Ballarat Cup at the end of a long spring that took in eight runs, including runs at Caulfield and The Valley at the peak spring meetings.

However, trainer Patrick Payne decided to give Double You Tee a short break with the Ballarat Cup in mind after the honest gelding finished fifth in a 2500m race at Flemington in September.

Double You Tee nearly fell in that race. Payne said the stayer took no harm from the incident but he decided to bypass Melbourne Cup qualifying races to target the Ballarat Cup.

“What we were trying to do is step around the spring to keep some fresh legs in him,” Payne said.

“I’m not saying he’s good enough to win on Saturday but I’m hoping that will hold him in good stead.

“We’ve tried not to wear him out in the good races, and I didn’t think he was good enough to win them anyway.”

Double You Tee was also narrowly beaten in last year’s Kyneton Cup. The son of Written Tycoon showed he was going as well as last year when beaten a head in the 2020 Kyneton Cup on November 4.

Payne has gone for the blinkers on Double You Tee on Saturday in a bid to find the small margin he needs to record a breakthrough win.

“We’ve put blinkers on him. He’s worked well in them but I don’t think they will be any miracles but he only got beaten a pimple last year,” Payne said.

“If he finds a neck, that will be fantastic.”

Payne’s regular stable rider Billy Egan will be aboard Double You Tee at Ballarat.

Double You Tee has drawn barrier 16 but Payne said the gate mattered little to his charge, who naturally races in the second half of the field.
