What Lampard said to Solskjaer on Man Utd and Chelsea’s tough watch

Frank Lampard had a sly word with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during Chelsea's 0-0 draw against Manchester United.

The Blues left a wet and windy Old Trafford with a point after a defensive display from both teams.

Neither side looked threatening and looked more concerned with not losing rather than winning the match.

Remarkably, it was just the second 0-0 under Lampard during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge – the first coming just days prior against Sevilla in the Champions League.

But it was a noticeable improvement on Chelsea's last league visit to United – Lampard's first game at the helm – which ended 4-0 to the hosts.

Nevertheless, for watchers at home it was hardly a spectacle – with neither side looking likely to find a winner.

And Lampard would agree, even telling Solskjaer as much during the 90 minutes.

The two could be seen exchanging words, and when asked what he told his counterpart, Lampard said: "It wasn't a classic, was it? I said that.

"If I was at half-five waiting for United and Chelsea, and you're a neutral, you want more.

"But I think at the start of this season I'm watching games, tough games.

"People are finding the same and we have to be humble to that and work and get better."

This is not the first time Lampard has traded words with the opposition, though this time appeared to be a lot more amicable.

There has already been clashes with Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho as Chelsea still look to put together some consistent form.

After six matches, the Blues are sixth after two wins after a transfer window that saw over £200m spent.

With so many new faces, Lampard is managing a huge squad that needs time to gel during a period where the games are coming thick and fast.

And Chelsea are back in action soon – travelling to Russia to take on Krasnodar in the Champions League on Wednesday.

There will be not much time on the training pitch afterwards, too, with a Saturday afternoon kick-off against Burnley to follow.

VAR denies Chelsea penalty as Cesar Azpilicueta questions Man Utd incident

Chelsea star Cesar Azpilicueta has questioned the decision not to award a penalty following a challenge from Harry Maguire.

The Blues earned a point against Manchester United in a dull goalless draw at Old Trafford.

Though many felt the visitors should have had a penalty following a tussle between Azpilicueta and Maguire in the penalty box.

Maguire seemed to drag the Blues captain down from a cross though no penalty was given even with VAR involved.

On whether the challenge should have been a penalty, Azpilicueta told Sky Sports: “A good question, on the pitch I felt yes and I felt arms around my neck and shoulders.

“The referee can make the decision, the VAR is there [to help]. In any situation the referee takes the main decisions and the monitor is there for him to help.

“It was 50-50 so why not take 20 seconds to review it? I think VAR can improve a lot.

“It happens, it is football, I don't say every time there is contact there should be a penalty. In England there is strong physical contact.

  • Donny van de Beek left gutted watching Man Utd and Chelsea bore while Ajax net 13

“In football and in the Premier League always we should seek improvement – it is not a criticism, we can all help together to make a better league.”

Chelsea struggled going forward with Frank Lampard’s side seemingly more determined to keep a clean sheet than score.

Azpilicueta added: "I have the feeling we could have done more. We found spaces but we didn't create the last pass or pick the right pass or make the right decisions.

“We defended solid and they have at the end one save by Edouard [Mendy] and in the first half one mistake by us, but we could do more.

"For moments we had spells. In the first half we controlled better but in the second half sometimes we rushed it and didn't move the ball good enough.

“We lost possession too easily which meant we lost some control but we showed solidity and it was a great effort from everybody. Obviously we want more."

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard must avoid similar tactical mistake vs Man Utd

Don’t wait 30 years – sign up for our daily football email newsletter today!

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will aim to record his first Premier League win over Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this evening.

Solskjaer’s Red Devils done the double over the Blues last season, first thumping Lampard 4-0 on his top-flight debut before claiming another 2-0 victory later in the season.

United also got the better of Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, with Marcus Rashford ’s breathtaking long-range free-kick the difference in their fourth-round win at Stamford Bridge.

Nevertheless, after three straight defeats against Solskjaer, Lampard finally came out on top when they met in the FA Cup semi-finals over the summer.

Chelsea stormed into a 3-0 lead at Wembley, before United added a late consolation when Bruno Fernandes swept home from the penalty spot.

In that victory, Lampard switched from his typical 4-3-3 setup to a 3-4-3 – which is a formation United have become accustomed to using themselves against top-level opposition.

The Blues cancelled out Solskjaer’s men on the day as a result, with Fernandes and Rashford enjoying little success against a well-drilled back three at the national stadium.

  • Marcos Rojo becomes Man Utd free-kick taker and almost replicates Cristiano Ronaldo

It proved an inspired tactical switch from Lampard, who had came unstuck against the same opposition three times earlier in the season by using a four-man backline.

The absence of midfield anchor N'Golo Kante admittedly influenced his decision on the day, yet it still proved one of Chelsea’s most dominant and compact performances of the 2019/20 campaign regardless.

Lampard also enjoyed success against Tottenham by setting up in similar fashion, becoming the first ever manager to do a league double over former boss Jose Mourinho last season.

It is no secret that his side have encountered defensive problems since he returned to Stamford Bridge, conceding an alarming 54 goals in his debut season at the helm and nine in their first five outings of the new season.

However, fielding a three-man backline often gives Chelsea some much-needed solidity when faced with a elite-level threat, and Lampard should be seriously considering it ahead of tonight’s pivotal showdown with United.

After adding an array of world-class talent to his ranks in the summer, he will have long-term plans to steer away from such a formation in order to accomodate the likes of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech.

But Lampard simply cannot afford to come away from Old Trafford empty handed this evening, which he very well could do by deploying his preferred 4-3-3 setup.

United are designed to sit deep and hit on the counter. It’s why they registered two wins over Chelsea in the Premier League last season and it’s why they also snatched a late 2-1 victory away at Paris St-Germain in the week.

Lampard's new-look Blues appear way too vulnerable right now, so he should cast his mind back to that fine Wembley outing in July and cancel Solskjaer out again tonight.

Timo Werner ‘is a departure for Chelsea’ after bargain summer transfer

Timo Werner’s arrival at Chelsea signifies a change in attack from the Blues, according to Tony Cascarino.

Werner arrived at Stamford Bridge from RB Leipzig in the summer and netted his first Premier League goals during the 3-3 draw with Southampton at the weekend.

The German has looked bright at times in the early stages of the season with many expecting him to become a regular scorer for the Blues.

Though Cascarino has noted how different the 24-year-old is to former strikers that have starred for Chelsea.

“Timo Werner is a departure for Chelsea in terms of the profile of their strikers,” Cascarino told The Times.

“In the Roman Abramovich era they have typically bought strong, robust forwards with aerial prowess to lead the line such as Didier Drogba, Olivier Giroud and Diego Costa.

“In Werner, they have a dynamo who loves to run in behind and thrives in one-on-one situations.

“We saw his full potential with his two goals against Southampton and his performance only underlines the fact that, at £47.5 million, Chelsea have got a serious bargain.”

  • Kepa Arrizabalaga told he is now No3-choice keeper at Chelsea after latest blunder

Frank Lampard has often used Werner out wide this season though Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes the frontman is at his best when he's played in a central striker role.

He said: "Yes, he is very sharp. He just turns the defender so easy and there is only one thing on his mind and that’s to get the shot off.

"He is not somebody who likes to play with his back to goal. He likes to see the goal and make his run always on the shoulder of the centre-halves.

  • Chelsea have learned many Champions League lessons since Bayern Munich humbling

"He just knows where the back of the net is. I like him when he plays through the middle but not when he plays on the left.

"He does drift and then come back but yeah, a top striker. His runs are limited because he can only come from the left and cut back into the right-sided centre-half, he is more restricted and he likes to be free.

"He likes to take his time and get the ball down. He is never with his back to goal. I didn’t like to do it, I wasn’t good enough like a (Johan) Cruyff or (Marco) van Basten or whatever.

"He is, in a way, the same. He knows his strength and he wants to make runs at the centre-half.

"For me, what I have seen of him, also in Germany, he is the real deal and he doesn’t care how they go in, he just wants goals."

Chelsea star Azpilicueta sends warning to team-mates ahead of Champions League

Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has urged his team-mates "start strong and then kick on" in this season's Champions League campaign after they struggled to get out of their group last year.

The Blues made hard work of qualifying for the knockout stages, losing their opening game 1-0 to Valencia, but they eventually pipped Ajax to qualification by a solitary point.

And Azpilicueta wants Chelsea to get off to a much better start this time around when they take on reigning Europa League champions Sevilla at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Speaking in the matchday programme, the Spaniard said: "That’s the way sometimes – a group goes up to the last second. We knew last year that we had to fight to qualify after we lost the first game at home against Valencia.

"That put us in a difficult position but we were able to recover with two wins in the next games. Hopefully we have learned from that and we know that, with our first game at home again, we have to start strong and then kick on."

Having worked under Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui during his time in charge of the Spain national team, Azpilicueta knows what to expect from Chelsea's opponents, adding: "Sevilla have shown their quality recently, in the last Europa League, where they were champions.

  • Frank Lampard rates Hakim Ziyech's debut as he admits to "hard" start at Chelsea

"I know a couple of their players well and I know their manager, Julen Lopetegui, who was the national team manager of Spain. They are going to be a dangerous team, but it’s our first game of this group, we are at home against them, and we have to go for it.

"We have both shown that we’re able to compete in Europe at the highest level, so it’s going to be interesting to play them in the very first game.

"It’s a huge game for them as well – their first game back in the Champions League after they were champions of the Europa League. Our last game in the Champions League was obviously not one that we want to keep in mind, but we learn from that.

"We know that when you compete against the best teams in Europe you have to be ready for it, so hopefully we can grow from last season’s experience and start this Champions League campaign in a good way."

Frank Lampard reacts to Kepa Arrizabalaga error which sparked Chelsea collapse

Frank Lampard insists Kepa Arrizabalaga wasn't solely to blame for Southampton's first equaliser against Chelsea on Saturday.

The Blues were held to a 3-3 draw by Ralph Hasenhuttl's men, with a 90th-minute equaliser from Jannik Vestergaard rescuing a point for Saints.

Kepa, who returned to the starting XI due to injury to Blues new-boy Edouard Mendy, didn't cover himself in glory for Saint's first leveller – which came via from Che Adams.

Adams was put through by a horrific back pass from Kurt Zouma, which left the former Birmingham City man bearing down on goal.

Kepa was tentative as he came off his line and ultimately bottled his challenge on Adams, who managed to keep the ball in play and smash it high into the net.

Many Blues fans were quick to pile on the world's most expensive keeper, who has made a string of errors over the last few months.

Lampard, however, insists the blame for Adam's goal doesn't solely rest at the 26-year-old's feet.

Premier League's most expensive kit deals

  1. Manchester United (Adidas) – £75m-a-season
  2. Liverpool (Nike) – £70m-a-season*
  3. Manchester City (Puma) – £65m-a-season
  4. Chelsea (Nike) – £60m-a-season
  5. Arsenal (Adidas) – £50m-a-season
  6. Tottenham (Nike) – £30m-a-season

*If bonuses are met

"I talked about Kepa before, and it wasn't just his fault in the goal," Lampard said. "Mendy is injured and could be fit in the next week or two weeks then it will be my choice."

Although Lampard doesn't hold Kepa solely responsible for Adams' goal, he wants the former Athletic Bilbao man to be strong enough to take the criticism that comes his way.

"He has to be strong enough, that is what it is like in elite sport and goalkeepers have to deal with that," the Blues boss said.

"He will have the support of myself and his teammates. It's a shame because he made some good saves."

Chelsea will be back in action on Tuesday night, welcoming Spanish giants Sevilla to Stamford Bridge for their opening Champions League group match.

Timo Werner "50% not happy" despite scoring first Chelsea Premier League goals

Timo Werner has said he is only 50% happy – despite bagging his first two Premier League goals.

The striker bagged a brace as Chelsea went on to draw 3-3 with Southampton.

Another error from goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and a 93rd minute equaliser from Jannick Vestergaard ensured the home side would not take all three points.

Frustrations with how the team have performed defensively have ensured that Werner cannot celebrate his goals.

"The first half we played very well," Werner said following the game.

"When you get a goal two or three minutes before half-time it is not easy. You have to think with a clear head.

"Southampton make a lot of pressure on us and pressed us high. We gave them too much in terms of opportunities. We have to win the game.

"I am happy about the goals but I want to win the game. 50% I am happy, 50% not.

"I don't know if we have a problem but the last three games we concede six goals and it is not where we want to be, to compete for titles.

"In Germany we always say defence wins titles. If we concede so many it is hard to win games and win titles."

Chelsea had looked to be flying from Werner's goals in the first-half.

But Danny Ings produced a typical finish before Che Adams capitalised from a Kepa howler to make the scores 2-2.

Kai Havertz hit back, but Southampton's pressure paid off in stoppage time when Vestergaard headed home.

Timo Werner names four Chelsea legends he idolised growing up

Timo Werner has named his manager Frank Lampard and Chelsea legends Didier Drogba, Petr Cech and Ashley Cole as the Blues players he admired while growing up.

The German forward completed a move to Stamford Bridge over the summer, signing from RB Leipzig for a fee of £48m in June.

He has yet to find the net in the Premier League, although he did open his account for the club by scoring in a Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham.

Big things are expected of the player in the future, and speaking in an interview with Three Werner acknowledged the fact he has big shoes to fill at Chelsea.

"The Premier League has become bigger and bigger and now it is the best league in the whole world," Werner said.

"For me it is a little bit of a dream come true to come and play now in the biggest league in the whole world.

"Of course as a child you don’t see much of the Premier League clubs but you see the teams at the Champions League.

"You see the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United. These were the clubs that in youth were winning a lot.

"You see maybe young Ronaldo, or here at Chelsea Didier Drogba and also Frank Lampard the manager. They have a lot of legends in the club here.

"When you come into the club they are working for the club and when you see them as a child, like 10, and then you see, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech, you say wow it’s crazy I am here with them now. It's a lot of fun."

Werner has recently been on international duty with Germany, and scored in their dramatic 3-3 draw with Switzerland in the Nations League.

He will now return to west London and will hope to get back on the scoresheet when his side take on Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday followed by a Champions League group stage game against Sevilla on Tuesday.

Chelsea transfer round-up – Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s rejection plus Kante latest

While most of Chelsea’s transfer business has been wrapped up, the longer deadlines for EFL clubs – as well as those in Russia and Portugal – means further deals can be done before the end of the month.

The Blues still have a packed squad, having spent more than £200million on new players in 2020, and exits appear more likely than arrivals.

We’ve got the latest on two players who have been linked with moves away – one of whom is expected to be playing his club football away from Stamford Bridge sooner rather than later and one of whom may be the subject of further interest in January.

There’s also an update on a big-name player reportedly courted by the Blues over the summer, who ended up staying put as Chelsea pursued a different target.

Moses’ exit delayed as deadline looms

Victor Moses has less than a week to complete his Chelsea loan exit, with delays over his medical delaying the former Wigan Athletic man’s move to Spartak Moscow.

The Nigerian international ended last season on loan at Inter Milan, but Antonio Conte’s side opted against taking up an option to make the deal permanent.

This opened the door for Spartak, but football.london reports that the deal has been held up despite the player verbally agreeing terms over a move.

However, the report suggests the delay is unlikely to put the move in any real jeopardy, with the Russian transfer window open until October 17.

Moses has played more than 100 games for Chelsea since joining from Wigan in 2012, but has been out on loan on multiple occasions, with the switch to Spartak poised to be his sixth temporary spell away from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea attempted Ter Stegen move before signing Mendy

Chelsea were reportedly one of three clubs who attempted to coax Marc-Andre ter Stegen away from Barcelona during the transfer window.

The Blues’ search for a new No.1 eventually led them to Edouard Mendy, but reports in Spain suggest they were keen on the German international and made an effort to tempt him away from Camp Nou.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), the London side were joined by Inter and Juventus in attempting to convince Ter Stegen to leave the club which he joined in 2014.

The report claims the former Borussia Monchengladbach keeper didn’t entertain a departure and always planned to commit his future to Barca.

Ter Stegen’s current deal expires in 2022, but he is expected to sign a new long-term contract keeping him in Catalunya until 2025.

N’Golo Kante remains a Chelsea player, but there were moments during the last transfer window when an exit for the Frenchman looked possible.

Inter was the most likely destination, according to reports over the last few months, with Antonio Conte pushing for a reunion with one of the most important members of his 2016/17 title-winning side.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Inside Futbol), Conte’s side haven’t given up hope of a move, and could return for the former Leicester City midfielder as soon as January.

However, a deal would seemingly be contingent on Inter finding a buyer for Christian Eriksen, with the club reportedly ready to listen to offers for the Dane less than a year after signing him from Tottenham Hotspur.

After struggling with injuries last season, Kante has started all four of Chelsea’s Premier League games this term.

N’Golo Kante’s relationship with Frank Lampard ‘cold’ after summer decision

N’Golo Kante’s relationship with Frank Lampard has reportedly “gone cold” in recent weeks after the Chelsea boss refused to grant him time off to attend a friend’s wedding.

Kante was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window, having been identified as a top target by former manager Antonio Conte at Inter Milan.

In the end the Italian club failed to submit an offer, nevertheless, meaning he has remained a Chelsea player until the January window at least.

Lampard spoke regularly about his desire to keep Kante over the summer, yet French outlet Le Parisien claim his relationship with the midfielder has since deteriorated.

When he arrived at Clairefontaine to meet up with the France squad last week, Kante is said to have appeared in good spirits after looking “grim” at Chelsea in recent weeks.

It is believed Lampard rejected his request to take a day off from Blues training to attend his friend’s wedding, a decision which he has struggled to accept.

The 29-year-old’s entourage therefore believe a move away from Stamford Bridge will be easier to achieve next year.

Inter would undoubtedly be in the running to prise Kante away from Chelsea in 2021 amid Conte’s admiration for him, although with over two years still to run on his current contract he will not come cheap.

The player himself reportedly dreams of playing for Real Madrid after supporting the Spanish champions in his childhood.

Los Blancos have not been touted as a realistic destination for him just yet, although fellow Frenchman Zinedine Zidane may look to explore a potential deal for his compatriot next summer if he becomes available.

Kante has made 175 appearances for Chelsea, winning the Premier League title under Conte in his debut season at the club.

He has also picked up the FA Cup and the Europa League in his time at Stamford Bridge, where he moved to after playing a key role in Leicester’s shock 2015/16 Premier League title triumph.
