Burnley vs Chelsea – Premier League: live score, lineups and update

Burnley vs Chelsea LIVE: Timo Werner DROPPED as Frank Lampard’s men head to Turf Moor with Sean Dyche’s struggling side hoping for first win… follow all the action right here

  • Chelsea travel to Burnley and will aim to return to winning ways in the league
  • Sean Dyche’s side are languishing in the bottom three and are without a win
  • Burnley XI: Pope, Lowton, Long, Tarkowski, Taylor, Westwood, Brownhill, Stephens, McNeil, Wood, Barnes
  • Chelsea XI: Mendy, James, Silva, Zouma, Chilwell, Mount, Kante, Havertz, Ziyech, Abraham, Pulisic
  • Latest Premier League news, live action and results can be found here
  • Premier League table – as it stands

Chelsea make the trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley and will look to build on their European victory in mid-week.

The 4-0 thrashing of Krasnodar in Russia will inspire hope that Chelsea can return to winning ways in the league after consecutive draws with Manchester United and Southampton.

Burnley, meanwhile, are yet to pick up their first win of the season. Typically a certainty to avoid the drop, Sean Dyche’s men will be hoping to cause an upset and haul themselves back on track.

Sportsmail’s DANIEL DAVIS will provide live coverage of Burnley vs Chelsea including the score, lineups and updates.

Host commentator

Many thought Chelsea would be full of attacking quality after their £253million summer spree. But after two clean sheets in a row, it is their defensive additions making all the difference.

Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva have plugged holes in Frank Lampard’s shaky backline and now Chelsea will be on the hunt for their fourth straight clean sheet today.

My colleague SAM BLITZ took a look at the impact both players have made so far.

The pre-match signs don’t make for particularly good reading for the Burnley faithful.

It has been 47 years since they last recorded a home win over Chelsea, and that came in August 1973.

Their only triumph against the Blues was in August 2017, a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge.

But this season has already thrown up plenty of shocks and surprise results so far… will there be another one today?

We’ve just over 20 minutes away from kick off at Turf Moor, and both sets of players are being put through their paces.

Edouard Mendy and Willy Caballero have been snapped warming up, with the under-fire Kepa Arrizabalaga missing out today through injury.

It would be fair to say that Chelsea’s new No 1 has been superb since arriving in the summer from Rennes.

Earlier this week, Frank Lampard had backed Hakim Ziyech to be the man who makes his team tick, and hopes hoping the winger can prove a worthy successor to Eden Hazard.

Lampard wanted to sign someone who can unlock deep-lying defences. Ziyech started for the first time on Wednesday as Chelsea beat Krasnodar 4-0 in the Champions League and will make his league bow today.

Sean Dyche admits he has been kept out of the loop regarding a proposed £200million takeover, despite playing an instrumental role in shaping the club’s identity since joining eight years ago.

Chairman Mike Garlick’s preferred bid is from Mohamed El Kashashy, an Egyptian entrepreneur, and Chris Farnell, a Cheshire-based sports lawyer, who have promised to keep him on the board.

The Chelsea boss has well and truly reshuffled his ranks after the midweek action!

Thiago Silva, Ngolo Kante, Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount have all been handed recalls.

Out go Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, Mateo Kovacic, Timo Werner and Jorginho.

Dale Stephens has come in for Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who misses out entirely this afternoon due to a calf injury.

Apart from that it is the same starting XI which fell to a narrow defeat against Tottenham last weekend.

Starting XI: Mendy, James, Silva, Zouma, Chilwell, Mount, Kante, Havertz, Ziyech, Abraham, Pulisic

Substitutes: Caballero, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Hudson-Odoi, Werner, Giroud

Starting XI: Pope, Lowton, Long, Tarkowski, Taylor, Westwood, Brownhill, Stephens, McNeil, Wood, Barnes

Substitutes: Peacock-Farrell, Rodriguez, Dunne, Thompson, Richardson, Brady, Vydra

Hello, all! Welcome along to Sportsmail’s live coverage of struggling Burnley’s home clash against Chelsea.

The hosts are without a win so far this season and talk of an imminent takeover has left even Sean Dyche in the dark. What an opportunity to lift the doom and gloom this is.

Chelsea, meanwhile, earned an emphatic Champions League win in Krasnodar in midweek and will be hoping to pick up another victory today.

We’ll bring you the team news very shortly…

Liverpool team news: Expected 4-3-3 for West Ham game – Rhys Williams set for league debut

Liverpool are going into the next few games knowing that they will be without a proper defence having lost Virgil van Dijk for the season and now Fabinho. The Brazilian had done a fine job standing in for the main man at the back but a hamstring injury in the Champions League has ruled him out until the international break. It means a first Premier League start for Rhys Williams is in the pipeline. Jordan Henderson could be another option but with Jurgen Klopp’s midfield already drained, it would be a surprise to see him abandon his captain’s ability from his preferred position.

Goalkeeper: Alisson

Jurgen Klopp will be praying to every god possible that his goalkeeper can stay fit as he goes through a rough patch with injuries to his defence.

Alisson is back in the team after an earlier problem that forced him to play Adrian – who did not impress during his stint between the posts.

The Brazilian makes such a huge difference to his side, not only with his ability in goal but the confidence he exuberates to his defenders.

And with Klopp set to make a big decision on his backline, he will need Alisson behind them to give them all the help he can.

Defenders: Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Williams, Robertson

Liverpool’s biggest problems will lie in defence these coming weeks having lost Van Dijk and Fabinho, as well as Joel Matip – the usual stand-in.

It means Klopp will be forced into throwing young Williams into the mix, though he could choose to play Henderson – who has played the role in the past.

But the 19-year-old has impressed his manager and coaches since his astronomical rise through the ranks.

Last year, Williams was playing for National League North outfit Kidderminster Harriers in the sixth tier of football but has already appeared in the Champions League this campaign.

Partnered with Joe Gomez, 23, as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold, it could be one of the more youthful backlines the Anfield outfit have fielded – making the 26-year-old Andy Robertson look like a veteran.

Midfielders: Wijnaldum, Henderson, Milner

Klopp will be tempted to deploy Henderson at the back but the injury woes to his midfield could force him to keep his captain in his preferred position.

Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all missing but there is a return for Georginio Wijnaldum, who could not have picked a better time to recover.

James Milner looks set to reprise his role in the starting XI and Klopp will be counting on his experience against a West Ham team that have enjoyed spoiling the party as of late.

They managed a brilliant comeback against Tottenham earlier this month, scoring three late goals in a 3-3 draw.

And the Hammers also earned a well-deserved point off Manchester City in a 1-1 draw and Klopp will want to avoid any banana skins as he guns down first spot in the Premier League.

Forwards: Salah, Firmino, Mane

With so much change behind them, the attack will most likely stay as solid as it has done to avoid any further complications.

The tried and tested trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane strike fear into any defence and have been the catalyst for Liverpool’s success over the past 24 months.

Salah has already got seven goals this season, leading Mane – who has four – while Firmino has lagged behind on just one – though he has more assists than the other two.

The Reds are unbeaten in eight attempts against West Ham with the last meeting being settled by a late Mane goal in a 3-2 win for Klopp’s men in February.

In fact, the Senegal international enjoys playing vs the Hammers – scoring in each of the last four matches he has faced them.

Source: Wolves, potential top pick LaMelo meet

Projected No. 1 pick LaMelo Ball met with the Minnesota Timberwolves, owners of the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, on Tuesday, a source told ESPN.

The meeting, conducted in Southern California, consisted of an interview and did not feature any basketball activity. It was attended by President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas and head coach Ryan Saunders, the source said.

The NBA relaxed restrictions on in-player evaluations and interviews in mid-October according to a memo obtained by ESPN, opening the way for teams to meet with prospects in advance of the NBA Draft scheduled for November 18th.

This was the first meeting Ball had conducted. He is tentatively scheduled to interview with the Golden State Warriors early next week, owners of the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft. The expectation is that he will also interview with the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls, who pick third and fourth.

It is not unusual for players projected at the top of the draft to decline to conduct work outs. There is more uncertainty around the top of the draft this year, though, and Ball’s last competitive game came nearly a year ago, on November 30th of 2019.

Ball played for the Illawarra Hawks in the Australian NBL, where he averaged 17 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.7 steals in 31 minutes per game, emerging as the potential No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA draft thanks to his combination of size, ballhandling ability, creativity and passing instincts.

Liverpool receive transfer boost over Virgil van Dijk replacement Klopp can sign for free

Liverpool are reportedly considering making a bid to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba on a pre-contract agreement this January after the Austrian rejected a new contract with the European champions.

Alaba could end up being the solution to Liverpool’s problems at the back, after yet another setback for the Reds.

Having lost Virgil van Dijk for the season due to an ACL injury, things took a turn for the worse on Tuesday night as his replacement, Fabinho, went down with a hamstring injury.

Not much is known yet about how severe the injury is, but he was taken off in the first-half of Tuesday’s Champions League win over FC Midtjylland.

He was replaced by youngster Rhys Williams, with Klopp short of options at the back as a result of injuries.

JUST IN: Arsenal eye Houssem Aouar transfer but Juventus have plan for £54m Gunners target

Joel Matip was also ruled out of the game after suffering a knock last weekend.

Liverpool are expected to dip into the transfer market during the January transfer window to sign a replacement for Van Dijk, with Klopp eyeing a centre-back to give himself more options.

And after Alaba rejected a new contract at Bayern, it seems he could be sold in January to prevent Bayern from losing him for free.

Football Insider claims the Austrian left-back, who has morphed into a centre-back in recent years due to the emergence of Alphonso Davies, has been a target for Liverpool for some time.

Liverpool have a good relationship with Bayern after negotiating a deal to sign Thiago Alcantara in the previous transfer window.

Thiago’s was a similar situation to Alaba, as he too refused to sign a new contract going into the final year of his contract.

And for that reason, they could be able to tempt the Bavarians into doing a deal over the defender.

Speaking after the Reds’ 2-0 win over Midtjylland, Klopp insisted he is happy with his options despite Fabinho’s injury.

He said: “Rhys Williams did really well – that was really good.

“He was commanding, he was chatty – it was a really good game from him.

“The only problem we have now is that there are four days until West Ham, and every day you [the media] will make a story about him and he’ll have to deal with that as well.

“He is a talent, he is 19. 2 Champions League appearances and he’s won both. Promising. But we have Nat Phillips [for the Premier League] – he’s a centre-back. Billy [Koumetio] – he will train too.”

Liverpool told how to solve Virgil van Dijk transfer issue with Jordan Henderson

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been told to use Jordan Henderson at centre-back to plug the gap left by Virgil van Dijk, in a move that could save the club in the January transfer market. The Reds have been tipped to sign a new defender during the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool will likely be without Van Dijk for the rest of the season after the 29-year-old suffered an ACL injury.

Van Dijk will undergo surgery after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament and could be forced to sit out until the start of next season.

As a result, Liverpool are light at the back and have only two senior centre-backs available to them in the form of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

When Matip was forced out of action last week after suffering a knock, Fabinho was forced to move into defence from midfield in order to cover.

JUST IN: Arsenal eye Houssem Aouar transfer but Juventus have plan for £54m Gunners target

The Brazilian is more than capable of playing at the back, and was tasked with leading the line against Ajax by Klopp.

Thiago Alcantara’s arrival means Liverpool have the flexibility of moving Fabinho down the pitch, but his injury history suggests he won’t be used in every game this season.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, speculation suggests the Reds will look to dip into the market and sign a new defender to cover and replace Van Dijk.

RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano is said to be Klopp’s first-choice option, with the Reds boss apparently eager to bring forward the club’s bid from next summer to January.

But according to former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, Klopp can solve the problem by giving Henderson a chance at the back.

The club captain, who usually plays in a central defensive midfield role, hasn’t been used at the back by Klopp yet, but Phillips believes his energy and eye for a pass make him the perfect candidate to fill in.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “You would not say Gomez has started the season well but last night will have helped him and he will only get better and better.

“Hopefully Gomez and Fabinho can forge a partnership that can stand the test of time until Virgil van Dijk gets back.

“I am going to put it out there, I actually think Jordan Henderson could play centre-half.

“I think that he has that knowledge and that knowhow.

“He has the energy, the pace and that range of passing.

“I think he could surprise people and plug the gap left by van Dijk at centre-half.”

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ben White has reportedly been eyed up as a potential long-term replacement for Van Dijk, but Liverpool icon Mark Lawrenson believes the Premier League champions need someone ready to play in the Champions League.

“He keeps improving. He was excellent at Leeds and they bid £25 million,” he said of White to The Argus.

“Say the likes of Liverpool are looking at him, it would be a long-term thing and I think you’d want to watch him week in and week out and see him against the very top players. You’re talking Champions League and therein lies the difference.

“There is no doubt he is going to be more than comfortable in the Premier League.

“But it’s like all the other names which have been bandied about. Will any of those players be good enough for the Champions League?”

Lionel Messi and three Barcelona players ‘refusing to agree pay cut’ as row erupts

Lionel Messi doesn’t want to accept a 30 per cent pay cut at Barcelona, it has been claimed. The La Liga giants have been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis and want to balance the books. But doing so appears easier said than done.

Messi’s relationship with Barcelona has been considerably worsened over the past few months.

The Argentina international was furious at the sacking of Ernesto Valverde back in January and also didn’t like the appointment of Quique Setien as his replacement.

Messi was further angered by the club’s Champions League exit to Bayern Munich last season, with the La Liga giants losing 8-2 on a chastening afternoon.

And he was unhappy at club president Josep Maria Bartomeu for denying him a move away from the Nou Camp, with the 33-year-old hoping to join Manchester City.

Now, as a result of the coronavirus crisis, Barcelona have asked their players to take a 30 per cent pay cut.

THINK YOU KNOW SPORT? Test your sporting knowledge with our tricky quiz

But Spanish pundit Eduardo Inda has claimed Messi has rejected that proposal, saying: “There are four players who accept the pay cut. They are Ter Stegen, De Jong, Lenglet, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto.

“Messi and Pique disagree. And they will have no choice but to lower their salary.”

Inda then claimed that Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Samuel Umtiti were all siding with Messi over the pay cut.

“There are three other French who have joined Messi in this war: Griezmann, Dembele and Umtiti,” he added.

“What the club is proposing is 30% to reach 20% and balance the accounts.”

Premier League done deals: Every confirmed transfer in the summer window

Barcelona are starting to fear a life without Messi, knowing the veteran will be able to leave the Nou Camp for free at the end of the season.

City remain keen on bringing the Argentine to the Etihad Stadium, despite Pep Guardiola missing out earlier in the summer.

And Barcelona icon Samuel Umtiti has expressed a belief that Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko can be Messi’s long-term successor in Catalonia, saying: “[There’s] a young player who plays for Dortmund called Youssoufa Moukoko.

“[He’s] 15 years of age, and he’s the next top player, for me, after Messi.

“As Messi gets older, we could prepare the future of Barcelona very well.”

Eto’o believes the Dortmund star can help Antoine Griezmann shine, with the France international struggling ever since his move from Atletico Madrid back in the summer transfer window of 2019.

“With Antoine and Youssoufa [up front together], that team would go forward very well,” Eto’o concluded.

“[I’d like to see] Kylian Mbappe at Barcelona also.”

Other clubs who could sign Messi include Juventus and PSG.

But what ultimately happens regarding his long-term future is something only time will tell.

What Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk said to Everton ace Jordan Pickford after injury

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk snubbed Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after his injury, reports say. The Netherlands international was fouled by the England shot-stopper in Saturday’s 2-2 draw and could now be sidelined for months. And he was far from impressed with Pickford when the Everton star tried to help him to his feet.

Liverpool could only manage a draw against Everton in Saturday’s blockbuster showdown.

The Reds took the lead twice through Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah respectively, but were pegged back by Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The biggest talking point from the showdown, however, was Pickford’s tackle on Van Dijk.

The Everton star slid through his man, getting none of the ball, and it’s since been suggested Van Dijk could miss the next seven to eight months through injury.

And the Liverpool Echo say that, after the incident, Pickford was snubbed when he tried to help the 29-year-old to his feet.

It’s claimed that Van Dijk was overheard saying ‘no’ to the Toffees goalkeeper as he attempted to lend a hand.

THINK YOU KNOW SPORT? Test your sporting knowledge with our tricky quiz

And Van Dijk, though he tried to carry on, was eventually forced to make way for Joe Gomez against his will.

Liverpool star Jordan Henderson claimed Pickford had apologised after the match, saying: “Everyone keeps asking us about it so I’m guessing it’s a red card. It mustn’t be a good challenge.

“To be fair, Jordan came up and apologised to me after the game and [told me] to tell Virgil.

“It mustn’t be great. But yeah, not just that incident, we created so many good chances to score and overall we should’ve won the game.”

Henderson had a late goal chalked off for offside, with Mane adjudged to be standing in an offside position.

And he said of that decision: “It does feel [pretty cruel].

Premier League done deals: Every confirmed transfer in the summer window

“You know better than me with the offside, but it must be [cruel] with VAR, that everyone wants. Yeah, disappointed that we haven’t got the win.

“I thought the performance was very good and we deserved to win the game.

“They bend the lines sometimes don’t they to make it offside? I’m not sure how they did it, yeah I’ve seen it before but not just that goal, our overall performance, the chances we created, we deserved to win, I thought from start to finish we were the better team. Everton will be the happier with the draw.”

Henderson was pleased with Liverpool bouncing back from their 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa before the recent international break.

“I had full confidence we would react in the right way and today we reacted very well. We knew it would be an intense game, Everton are doing so well at the moment,” he said.

“We knew it would be a good game, intense but I thought we did enough to win the game. But there’s still positives going into the next game.

Get NOW TV Sky Sports season pass and save 25 percent

“The result at [Aston] Villa woke us up a bit certainly, it was a bad game overall, we all know that.

“After that it’s about the reaction and I thought the boys reacted really well. That’s all you can ask, to give everything, especially in a derby.

“Playing the way we did, some of the football, the chances we created, we defended well with intensity.

“Very happy with the performance. Disappointed we didn’t get the three points but we move on and go again.

“We take it by each game. The next game is the biggest game and this was our biggest game today. Ajax is our next biggest game.

“We’ll not look forward too far, we always concentrate on what’s important and that’s the next game.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp names Jordan Henderson as man who could replace him at Anfield

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has suggested Jordan Henderson could replace him as manager at Anfield one day and would be just ‘like Kenny Dalglish’. Klopp cheekily suggested his current captain could be the player-manager for the side.

Henderson starts today in the Merseyside derby against Everton as the Reds look to bounce back from the 7-2 thrashing at the hands of Aston Villa.

The Toffees will be a tough test though as they have won all four of their top-flight games so far this season.

Ahead of the match Klopp was asked who could be in line to replace him one day at Liverpool.

The German responded by light-heartedly suggesting Henderson could be the man.

“[Henderson] would be the right age!” Klopp told talkSPORT.

“He can be player-manager like Kenny [Dalglish] for the next three years and everything will be fine!”

Henderson has previously opened up on how much the squad respects Klopp for the journey he has taken them on.

Liverpool won the Premier League for the first time since 1990 last season and the Champions League the year prior.

“It’s no secret what this squad thinks of Jurgen Klopp,” Henderson said back in July.

“If you think as supporters you appreciate what he has done for this club, you can multiply that by a hundred for the team: he is our leader – he has set the tone for all of this from the day he walked in.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp criticised for big decision ahead of Merseyside derby

Liverpool have been criticised for not signing a goalkeeper with Alisson out injured and in the aftermath of Jack Butland making a switch to Crystal Palace. Adrian had a nightmare performance in the 7-2 loss to Aston Villa before the international break leading to calls for a signing to be made.

Klopp has stuck with his current options though despite Alisson being on the sidelines.

That means Adrian will start against Everton this lunchtime in the Merseyside derby with youngster Caoimhin Kelleher next in line.

Liverpool were linked with Paulo Gazzaniga on the first deadline day as well as Butland all of this week.

But Klopp clearly feels Adrian is good enough to start but fans are not convinced at all by the former West Ham man.

One tweeted: “That was really a wasted oportunity, definetly better than Adrian.”

Another added: “Crystal Palace’s second choice keeper has picked up an injury (couple of weeks out) so palace are moving to bring in Butland.

“Liverpool’s first choice keeper is out for 6 weeks and we do nothing? Shambles.”

A third explained: “Liverpool should be looking at bringing Butland in as 2nd choice GK. Prem experience, still young and wasn’t long ago an international GK.”

One more said: “Jack Butland at 27 and for £500k transfer fee is a huge improvement on Adrian as number two keeper, can’t help you if you can’t see that.”

Butland joined Crystal Palace yesterday to provide competition for Vicente Guaita at Selhurst Park.

Roy Hodgson was delighted to sign the man he often included in his England international sides.

Hodgson said: “I’m very happy that the club has managed to acquire the signature of Jack to join us and compete for a place amongst our goalkeepers at the club.

“Jack is a player that I worked with for four years at England.

“His last game for me as England manager was a very unfortunate one where he broke his ankle and that cost him his place in the 2016 Euros. But I’ve always believed in Jack’s potential.

The Toffees will hope to beat their rivals and make it five wins from five in the Premier League so far this season.
