SEC clears Nick Saban to coach Alabama versus Georgia

Alabama coach Nick Saban will be back on the sideline against Georgia after all.

The Southeastern Conference cleared Saban on Saturday to coach in the game after he tested negative for COVID-19 the past three days.

The move came hours ahead of Saturday night’s game between the second-ranked Crimson Tide and No. 3 Bulldogs.

Saban had initially tested positive on Wednesday, along with athletic director Greg Byrne. Team physician Jimmy Robinson said Saban was tested the next three mornings, and the initial result was deemed a false positive.

“Those three negative tests satisfied the SEC protocol for a false positive,” Robinson said. “Out of an abundance of caution, two additional PCR tests were administered at the same time on Thursday and Friday and were tested by a separate lab. Those tests were also negative.”

The initial positive came from an outside lab Alabama had used to supplement the testing mandated by the SEC.

Nick Saban tests positive for COVID-19; Steve Sarkisian to lead Alabama against Georgia

Alabama football coach Nick Saban became the latest sports figure to test positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, according to a statement from the university.

“I found out earlier this afternoon that I had tested positive for COVID-19,” Saban said. “I immediately left work and isolated at home. At this time, I do not have any symptoms relative to COVID, and I have taken another PCR test to confirm my diagnosis.”

With Saban out for this weekend’s game against No. 3 Georgia, offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will oversee game preparation, while Saban said he will “work from home.” Saban told players of his positive test via Zoom at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Sarkisian was the head coach at Washington from 2009 to 2013 and USC in 2014-15, amassing a combined record of 46-35 (.568).

Browns RB Nick Chubb (knee) exits in first quarter vs. Cowboys, ruled out

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb has been ruled out the rest of Sunday’s game against the Cowboys.

In the first quarter, Chubb was pass blocking on a play where a Cowboys defender was pushed into his legs behind him. Chubb clutched his knee in pain but walked off the field under his own power.

Chubb’s day ended after that play with six rushes for 43 yards.

Kareem Hunt assumed the role of the Browns’ featured back upon Chubb’s exit and proceeded to find the end zone twice in what has materialized into a shootout with the Cowboys.

Chubb is amid a hot start to the 2020 season with 51 rushes for 292 yards and four touchdowns (averaging 5.7 yards per carry). While the Browns do have a serviceable backup in his place, Chubb is an essential piece to an offense that has scored over 34 points in it’s third consecutive game on Sunday.

Nick Chubb injury update: Browns running back leaves game with apparent leg injury

Nick Chubb exited Sunday’s game against the Cowboys and has been ruled out.

The Browns running back was rolled up on during pass protection during the second quarter, and clutched his knee after the contact.

Chubb would get up and walk to the locker room under his own power. The Browns initially designated Chubb’s return as questionable before downgrading him to out.

Chubb is off to a hot start to the 2020 season, etching four touchdowns through his first three games with Cleveland this year, his first with head coach Kevin Stefanski. Chubb had over 1,700 scrimmage yards in 2019 as the team’s primary running back.

In his stead, Kareem Hunt has taken over the carries, scoring a touchdown to help the Browns extend their lead over Dallas.
